Experience

Charles Thompson joined KM&M as a partner in January 2003. Charles has extensive litigation and trial experience representing employers in wrongful termination, discrimination, and other employment-related cases. He counsels employers in all areas of employment law, including employee discipline and termination, ADA compliance, family medical leaves, layoffs and reorganizations. He advises and defends employers regarding wage and hour compliance including independent contractor and exempt/non-exempt status issues. He litigates cases involving trade secrets and unfair competition claims. Charles also represents employers in traditional labor law matters, including unfair labor practice and representation hearings before the NLRB and advises them regarding union activity and organizing. He creates and provides workplace training programs to California employers on sexual harassment, workplace violence, corrective action and discipline, workplace investigations, managing the borderline employee, and avoiding wrongful termination claims.

Charles attended Yale University where he received his B.A., cum laude, in 1982, and he earned his law degree in 1987 from University of Texas where he was Articles Editor of the Texas Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif.

Charles was a judicial clerk for the Honorable Patrick E. Higginbotham of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a faculty member of San Francisco Law School, where he teaches employment and discrimination law, and also of the Council on Education in Management, the largest provider of employment-related seminars in the United States. He is President of Mission Neighborhood Centers, a non-profit community service in the Mission District of San Francisco that sponsors the Head Start Program, and First Vice-President of the national Board of Directors of the NAMES Project Foundation.
