USCIS Says COVID-19 Testing and Treatment Will Not Negatively Impact Applicants

March 15, 2020

The US Citizenship & Immigration Services has announced that being tested or treated for COVID-19 will not be considered a negative factor for green card applicants and others subject to the “public charge” analysis, even if the screening or treatment is provided or paid for by a public benefit. Likewise, if an applicant is prevented from working or attending school because of the COVID-19 outbreak and is forced to use public benefits to support themselves during this time, they may submit documentation to USCIS to explain their use of public benefits.

In its announcement, USCIS stated that it urges anyone with COVID-19 symptoms to seek medical treatment if needed, regardless of their immigration status.
