Department of State Temporarily Halts Student & Exchange Visitor Visa Interviews to Expand Vetting

On Tuesday, May 27th it was reported that the Trump Administration ordered U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world to temporarily cease scheduling student (F and M) and exchange visitor (J) visa interviews while the administration prepares new guidelines for vetting the social media of these applicants. The State Department has not yet clarified what kinds of social media content could lead to a visa denial under their new policy, but media content relating to the war in Gaza, the support of Palestinian rights, criticizing Israel or opposing U.S. foreign or domestic policy are likely to be among the topics that trigger higher scrutiny (as is currently the case).

It is not yet clear how long the interview pause will last or even whether applicants who already have scheduled interviews will be able to attend their appointments. We recommend canceling or postponing non-essential travel if you are currently in the U.S., require an F, M or J visa to return after your next international trip, and do not yet have an appointment scheduled.
